Get ready for the CVSA’s International Roadcheck Event! The largest North American event geared toward safety inspections for commercial vehicles is slated to take place Tuesday, June 6 through Thursday, June 8. The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) International Roadcheck takes place every year and can cause potential delays for Carriers and Shippers alike in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Over this 72 hour period, CVSA inspectors will carry out inspections of commercial motor vehicles and their drivers across North America. This year’s safety focus will be on cargo securement.
According to CVSA, inspectors will be conducting the North American Standard Level I Inspection, which is a 37-step procedure that focuses on driver operating requirements and vehicle mechanical fitness.
Drivers will need to have their driver’s license, hours-of-service documentation, motor carrier registration and shipping documentation on hand. Inspectors check for seat belt usage, potential drug or alcohol use, and check the safety of the commercial vehicle such as brake systems, cargo securement, coupling devices, driveline/driveshaft, exhaust systems, frames, fuel systems, lighting devices, steering mechanisms, etc. (for a full list, see CVSA’s website).
During 2016’s inspections, CVSA placed 21.5 percent of trucks (9,080) out of service from inspections, along with 3.4 percent of drivers (1,436). Brakes and hours were the top out-of-service violations listed for 2016.
Keep in mind that due to these inspections, there could be potential impacts on capacity because of the number of carriers choosing to avoid the roads during this 72-hour period and the number of trucks removed from service.
Here’s what you can expect: – Possible increase in shipping transit time – Lengthy tractor trailer inspections throughout North America – Temporary drop in tractor trailer capacity – Rate spikes in the spot market
