CVSA International Roadcheck Takes Place in June

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) International Roadcheck will be taking place from June 4-6, 2019. During this time, motor vehicle inspectors throughout North America will be conducting inspections of motor vehicles and drivers.

The Focus: Steering and Suspension Systems

This year’s focus will be on steering components and suspension systems as a reminder of their importance to highway safety.

Steering and suspension are safety critical systems for any commercial motor vehicle,” said CVSA President Chief Jay Thompson with the Arkansas Highway Police. “Not only do they support the heavy loads carried by trucks and buses, but they also help maintain stability and control under acceleration and braking, keeping the vehicle safely on the road.”

CVSA Inspection Checks

During the International Roadcheck, inspectors will conduct the North American Standard Level I Inspection, which is a 37-step procedure that focuses on driver operating requirements and vehicle mechanical fitness. Drivers will need to provide their operating credentials and Medical Examiner’s Certificate and Skill Performance Evaluation Certificate, if applicable. Additionally, inspectors will check for seatbelt usage, potential drug or alcohol use, and safety of the commercial vehicle, such as brake system, cargo securement, coupling devices, driveline/driveshaft components, exhaust systems, etc. (check out the full list on CVSA’s website).

What to Expect

Due to these inspections, there could be potential impacts on capacity since many carriers choose to avoid the roads during this 72-hour period. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Possible increase in shipping time
  • Lengthy tractor trailer inspections across North America
  • Temporary drop in truck capacity
  • Rate spikes in the spot market
