Crowdstrike Global Outage Event

On July 19, 2024, CrowdStrike released an update for its Falcon Sensor software. The update caused a significant global IT outage, crashing millions of Windows computers and displaying what you might otherwise know as the “Blue Screen of Death.”

Around 8.5 million systems worldwide were affected. The outage interrupted businesses of all kinds, including airlines, healthcare, banks, and more. Here are a few examples of the disruption the outage caused.

Airlines

At LaGuardia Airport, the outage caused their baggage handling system to fail, causing significant delays and widespread operational disarray. Wait times were extensive, and many passengers missed their flights.

Delta Airlines was the largest airline affected by the outage. The company had to reset over 40,000 servers and manually cancel 5,000 flights, losing over 500 million dollars in revenue.

Healthcare

Hospitals like the Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, and Mass General Brigham faced system crashes that affected patient care and administrative functions. Electronic health records went offline, delaying medical procedures and patient admissions. The estimated financial impact on the healthcare sector alone was around $1.94 billion.

Banking

Preventing Digital Disruption in Your Business

Have a Strong Incident Response Plan

A well-structured Incident Response Plan (IRP) is crucial for navigating outages. For many businesses, the CrowdStrike outage was a wake-up call about the importance of having a detailed IRP. Most organizations now have plans for cyber threats but remain unprepared for a service outage.

Organizations need well-defined and practiced IRPs. An effective IRP ensures faster recovery and coordinated actions during outages.

A proper incident response plan should have the following components:

Without a solid IRP, chaos can arise when essential tools and services go down. Time is so critical in these kinds of situations. Companies that don’t respond to incidents fast often face increased downtime and direct revenue loss.

According to a SANS report, companies without a proper IRP take 54 percent longer to contain incidents that cause downtime. Additionally, a study from Ponemom Institute found that organizations without an effective IRP team experienced 54 percent more downtime compared to those with one.

Having an IRP in place is crucial, but the second most important aspect is testing it often! This ensures that the plan is effective, team members are familiar with their roles, and potential gaps are identified before an actual incident occurs.

Review Your Software Deployment Practices

Deploying new software can be a very complex process, especially when it is dependent on other applications or systems. The CrowdStrike global outage was caused directly by this issue, as it was dependent on the Windows operating system.

Here are some best practices for establishing an effective deployment process.

Keep a Vendor Patch Schedules

Stay informed about each vendor’s patch release schedule to plan and prepare for upcoming updates.

Document Everything

Keep detailed records of all patching activities, including what was patched, when, and by whom.

Assess Your Vendor Relationships

Periodic assessment of third-party vendors is necessary to ensure resilience.  The CrowdStrike outage has prompted many organizations to reconsider their vendors. Businesses should assess vendor relationships to confirm they meet the organization’s risk tolerance and operational needs.

Severe weather events are the new normal. Can the logistics industry handle more supply chain disruption?

It’s a hot, sunny day, and you’ve found the perfect spot on the beach to sit back, relax, and enjoy the cool breeze of the ocean waves. As you’ve sat down and unpacked your snacks, a thunderstorm rolls in, causing the lifeguards to hop off their chairs, stating the beach is closing. Plans = ruined.

We’ve all been there – when poor weather makes an inconvenient appearance. But severe weather is more than just rain on your wedding day. It’s more extreme, like high winds, flooding from heavy rain, wildfires, or droughts. Severe weather events are becoming more intense and commonplace, causing supply chains to struggle. Logistics professionals often face challenges like disrupted deliveries, product shortages, and skyrocketing costs.

From intense hurricanes to wildfires, the growing effects of climate change on supply chains are becoming impossible to ignore. In a report by Breakthrough, 39 percent of transportation professionals note severe weather as the biggest challenge to their networks, having primary concerns surrounding climate change and sustainability. With severe weather and its effect of supply chain disruption being a challenge for companies for the foreseeable future, they must take proactive measures to maintain resiliency. Is your supply chain prepared?

CASES OF SUPPLY CHAIN DISRUPTION FROM RECENT SEVERE WEATHER

Climate change has led to an increase in severe weather events. If you’re uncertain as to how much of an increase we’ve seen, let me share an eye-opening fact with you. The U.S. National Climate Assessment estimates that in the 1980’s, a billion-dollar extreme weather event would take place once every four months. Now, they occur once every three weeks! That’s not a lot of downtime in between events for affected supply chains to regroup.

Supply chain disruption from severe weather like the ones mentioned below is no longer a distant worry but a constant concern.

Droughts

In recent years, droughts have been impacting vital waterways. The Panama Canal, a critical path for global shipments, has experienced its worst drought since records began in 1950. Due to low water levels, restrictions were imposed, limiting heights and the number of daily vessels. Similarly, the Mississippi River has faced periods of drought and low water levels, making it difficult to transport goods.

Elevated heat and droughts affect not only waterways for transportation but also the production of goods. For example, coffee, cocoa beans, and olives have all recently faced drought conditions, resulting in a lower output of their respective products.

Wildfires

Often fueled by extreme heat and droughts, wildfires are now an expected annual danger to many parts of the world, like the Western U.S. and parts of Canada. Fire seasons start earlier and last longer while growing in intensity and size. Though the wildfires themselves are one problem, the spread of the smoke coming off them greatly expands their impact. The smoke reduces not only our air quality but also visibility, such as with the wildfires in Canada in 2023, which created widespread smoky conditions and delayed several shipments in populated locations such as Chicago and New York.

Hurricanes

Hurricane Season continues to bring more hurricanes and stronger storms each year. In fact, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) forecasts that the 2024 season will see 17 – 25 named storms, with four to seven being a Category 3 or greater. On average, there are 14 named storms with three being a Category 3 storm or greater.

Hurricane Ian was one severe weather event to cause supply chain disruption in the Southeast in 2022. Ian was a Category 4 storm when it made landfall in Florida and resulted in a 75 percent drop in shipments during its course. More than $416 million of citrus crops, a major good grown in the area, were destroyed by Ian.

Another Category 4, Hurricane Harvey, struck Texas in 2017. More than 50 inches of rain fell, breaking previous U.S. records and causing massive flooding, which closed roadways and many facilities. Several ports along the Gulf Coast were closed for nearly a week.

Even a Category 1 hurricane can impact supply chains. In July 2024, Hurricane Beryl hit South Texas, causing major flooding, power outages, and port closures.

Deep Freezes

Several locations have seen unusual deep freezes in recent years. In 2021, Texas saw a widespread freeze that their electric grid was unplanned for, causing a blackout for over two weeks. Many manufacturing businesses had to shut down, and railroads did, too. This caused significant supply chain disruption for transportation between Texas and the Pacific Northwest.

In 2022, New York experienced Winter Storm Elliott, which lasted roughly a week. Heavy snowfall and extreme cold temperatures caused power outages, resulting in a 40 percent decrease in shipment volume.

These are just a few examples of the impact severe weather has had on supply chains in recent years. Scientists believe that supply chain disruption from severe weather events will only intensify in the coming years as extreme temperatures and sea levels continue to rise.

HOW SEVERE WEATHER CAUSES SUPPLY CHAIN DISRUPTION

Damages and delays from severe weather can impact production, reducing inventory and capacity. Increased demand then increases the cost of materials, products, or shipping.

HOW SUPPLY CHAINS CAN STAY PROACTIVE

While you can’t control the weather, you can control whether your supply chain is prepared. Now is the time to be proactive and plan so your supply chain survives and thrives when severe weather strikes.

Assess Your Risk

Map out your entire supply chain to find gaps and vulnerabilities. Identify which companies and suppliers are involved and what severe weather events might impact them. If capable, look at previous data on supply chain disruption to learn from it. Are there certain sites that experience frequent disruption? How could you have been better prepared?

Have a Contingency Plan

Now that your supply chain is mapped and risks identified, it’s time to build plans for when disruption hits. Confirm that your supply chain partners have their own plan in place. Determine backup suppliers and partners for when current ones are affected. Find and select alternative transportation methods and routes. Once established, regularly assess this plan to ensure it will operate effectively.

Invest in Extra Insurance

This may seem like simple advice but invest in insurance to protect your business from losses. For example, flood or hurricane insurance will help you restore any damaged assets from a severe storm. Business interruption coverage can offer added protection, covering any lost sales during a disruption from severe weather.

Invest in Technology

There is a lot of technology available to help you be prepared for severe weather. Technology with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and predictive analytics can be useful to help you forecast and respond quickly when issues unfold. Leveraging AI and machine learning can help you reach a level of automation in which decisions can be made from data in a matter of seconds.

Create End-to-End Visibility

One of the most common weaknesses in supply chains is a lack of visibility. With the increase in severe weather and supply chain disruption, visibility is needed now more than ever. Having real-time access to tracking, carriers, suppliers, and inventory can help you identify any issues before disruption takes place.

Trinity Logistics, a leading nationwide logistics provider, is pleased to announce the recent promotions of two key Team Members, Jake Lafferty and Dylan Banning, to Vice Presidents of their respective Regional Service Centers (RSCs). 

Jake Lafferty, who joined Trinity Logistics in June of 2019, has been promoted to the Vice President of the Texas RSC. In his previous four years of dedicated service as the Director of Sales in Texas, Jake played a pivotal role in driving growth within that Team. His wealth of experience, strategic mindset, and deep understanding of the logistics industry makes him an excellent fit for this elevated leadership position. 

“It’s been an exciting journey over the last four years leading the Texas Sales Team,” said Lafferty. “As I move into my new role, I’m excited to positively impact more people within the company. Trinity has given me and my family so much since I’ve joined. I view this new opportunity as a way to help preserve the culture and opportunities for other Team Members at Trinity, so they may have a similar experience as I did.”

Dylan Banning, a familiar face within the company, is taking on the role of Vice President at Trinity’s Minnesota RSC. Dylan’s journey with Trinity began in 2013 when he joined as an intern. Dylan’s strong dedication and impressive work ethic helped him climb the ranks, serving in various capacities, most recently as Director of Sales at the Delaware RSC, Trinity’s corporate location. Dylan’s proven leadership and commitment to Trinity, along with his familial ties to the Bannings, the original creators and owners of the company prior to 2019, showcases the legacy that still resides within Trinity’s culture today. 

“I feel extremely honored and excited for the opportunity to work with and lead the Minnesota Regional Service Center,” said Banning. “I’m grateful for the five-plus years spent in the Delaware office, where I was surrounded by amazing Team Members and leaders who continuously promoted growth and opened doors to opportunities across the company. I look forward to getting started in Minnesota and can’t wait to see what the Team will accomplish in the future!”

Freight consolidation is when a shipper combines multiple shipments within a region into a single load hauled by a carrier to a destination region. The load gets broken down into smaller parts and delivered by a regional carrier to their many destinations. Or vice versa, they get picked up by a regional carrier to merge into a single shipment and delivered to their destination. Freight consolidation is ideal for shippers who frequently move a few pallets or smaller amounts of product.

Savings

Often, shippers will only use half or two-thirds of a trailer but still pay for the entire space. Whereas, with freight consolidation, you can earn preferred rates and optimize your logistics. Most importantly, you save time and money. 

By consolidating your smaller, regional freight, you can avoid paying a higher rate. By shipping your freight all at once instead of sending loads individually, you’re able to pay bulk rates. 

You can also avoid the costs that come along with using storage sites, inventory management facilities, and your own fleet of vehicles. Freight consolidation providers can provide these for you to better manage your shipment until its delivered. You won’t have to store your shipment on your own. Instead, you’ll be able to send it to the facility where it will ship to your retailers. This will help streamline the process should you need more inventory.

Because freight consolidation can seem complicated, not all carriers are willing to haul them. Even when you can find a carrier willing to transport your consolidated shipments, be sure that you are well-informed and charged appropriately. Partnering with a third-party logistics company (3PL) can help assure you find a carrier to haul your shipment and get a fair rate for it.

More Time Planning

Although it can save you time transporting, consolidated shipping does need some extra time spent organizing and planning. You’ll need to be aware of factors such as pricing, dimensions, timing, and other specifics to guarantee that your shipments arrive both safely and on time.

Have you ever wondered what a freight broker is, what they do, and why they exist?

To put it in simple terms, freight brokers are simply matchmakers. They are the middleman between the shipper (the maker or owner of the product) and the trucking company that moves the freight.

Freight brokers perform a valuable service for both ends of the spectrum, however, they do not function as an actual motor carrier. Instead, they arrange for the transport of goods.

Freight broker activities are under the jurisdiction of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) which defines a broker as “a person who, for compensation, arranges, or offers to arrange, the transportation of property by an authorized motor carrier”.  -49 C.F.R. Part 371

Brokerages

Freight brokerages provide assistance to motor carriers by filling their trucks and providing assistance along the route to help the truck driver deliver the order on time.

Not every motor carrier has a private sales force working to secure loads for their fleet and needs help accessing a network of shippers quickly to keep them rolling. Freight brokers also provide great financial service to truckers, providing fuel advances to help with cash flow and offering quick payment plans. Oftentimes, the carrier is paid before the freight broker collects payment from the shipper! Bottom line, a freight broker exists to help the motor carriers relocate their equipment to a better freight market, or in many cases, back to their home base.

Many companies find the services provided by freight brokers to be an important link in their supply chain. The importance of a freight broker is easy to understand; the freight broker makes sure that the shipments are arranged to deliver on time at a fair price with reputable providers. Without freight brokers, shippers would encounter an enormous investment of time and money trying to find the right motor carrier to transport their products, tracking the shipment, and auditing freight bills.

We decided to ask them to share some of their extensive knowledge in this industry with us so we could offer you several tips to keep in mind when shipping heavy haul. Time is on your Side

The more notice you can provide of an upcoming over-dimensional shipment, the better. Loads such as bulldozers, excavators, and graders often require specialized equipment that can be in limited supply. By notifying your carrier or logistics provider well in advance, they can get to work on getting the right equipment in position. Always remember, time is money!

Along with providing an advanced notice on these shipments, you’ll also need to coordinate the logistics upfront. The specialized equipment used for heavy haul shipping is expensive and in high demand. If there are any delays in getting the truck loaded or unloaded, there may be significant detention charges. Timing is everything, so be sure to communicate the needs for these shipments in advance in order to avoid those charges.

Information is King

Knowing the exact information regarding your heavy haul shipping is extremely important, especially in regard to getting permits. You should know the length, width, height, and weight of the shipment. You’ll also need to provide the make, model, and serial number if applicable. Educate yourself on permit requirements and heavy haul dimensions so that your shipment process runs smoothly.

Know the State Regulations

The issuance of permits for over-dimensional shipments is handled by each individual state. Some handle these requests promptly, while others are slower.  As a general rule, the bigger the shipment, the longer it will take. The state will also decide which routes the truck must follow, as well as determine if there are any travel restrictions in terms of hours or days.  Often times, weekend and nighttime travel is restricted. Prepare yourself by looking into state restrictions and permits so you can be better equipped to ship your heavy haul.

Tarp Troubles

Please know if your load will require tarping! Over-Dimensional loads will often require more tarps than the typical truck carries. If your shipping partner is aware of this upfront, they can be sure the truck will have the necessary tarps. Large and/or odd-sized pieces will be difficult for even the best drivers to tarp by themselves. Any assistance you can offer is appreciated, even if it’s simply a safe place out of the elements. Being aware of these elements of over-dimensional and heavy haul freight can help ensure your freight arrives at its destination in a safe and timely manner.

Build Relationships

Build a relationship with an experienced logistics provider, like Trinity, to help save you time and money. If you’ve never worked with a 3PL (third party logistics) company, you might not know how to go about selecting a reputable provider for you and your freight. There are many factors you should consider when making this important decision.

To help avoid the possible problems that can arise from using a 3PL, there are important things you should consider before partnering with one. To ensure you’re getting competitive rates while still working with a top 3PL, take into account these factors:

1. Who are you really entrusting your freight to?

Don’t pass off your precious cargo to just anyone. Top 3PL’s are only as trustworthy as their carrier network. You should ask if your 3PL has a carrier compliance management system in place. Check to see that they’re monitoring their carriers’ safety ratings and insurance. A top-notch provider will thoroughly vet the carriers they’re working with, while other companies might just offer your freight to the first carrier who raises their hand.

If they have a reputation for freight going missing or shady business practices, chances are, those rumors have some truth behind them. Be sure to do your research.

3. Is your 3PL financially stable?  

Working with a 3PL that isn’t financially healthy could prove to be disastrous. A company that is unstable might not be paying their carriers on time, which could mean less reliable carriers are handling your freight. Additionally, entrusting your shipments to a company that could be closing its doors next week would negatively impact your business’ bottom line. A top 3PL should be able to provide you with an honest picture of their financial situation.

4. Do they have a claims management department to offer negotiation on your behalf?

A 3PL that has a claims team who will act on your behalf to negotiate your freight claims with carriers offers a valuable service that could save your business money in the long run.
